    Biofilm Modelling Course - October 2017


    Day 1
    Lecture 1 – Introduction models and balances (2h)
    Practice 1 – Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics. Bioreactor operation models (6h – computer with COMSOL)
    - Batch, fed-batch, sequencing batch, continuous (mixed and plugflow)
    - Trickle filter model development with progressing complexity


    Day 2
    Lecture 2 – Biofilm modelling principles (3h)
    Practice 2 – Modelling solute concentration in biofilms: one-dimensional (co- and counter-diffusion)
    (5h – computer with COMSOL)


    Day 3
    Lecture 3 – Modelling biofilm development: growth, attachment and detachment (2h)
    Practice 3 – Continuum models for biofilm development (growth; detachment)
    (6h – computer with COMSOL)


    Day 4
    Lecture 4 – Multidimensional biofilm models (2h)
    Practice 4 – 2d and 3d models, flow and reactive transport (flowcells, porous media, etc.)
    (6h – computer with COMSOL)


    Day 5
    Lecture 5 – Discrete (individual-based) models (2h)
    Practice 5 – Individual-based 2d and 3d models (6h – computer with MATLAB and COMSOL)
    Discussions with participants and maybe implementation of some models of their own interest (could be also every day allocated).
